no such file /dev/mixer with Volume

I've got a custom Ubuntu minimal install. OSS is no longer built with the kernel. It requires it to be recompiled.

I have Firefox flash plugins outputting sound through ALSA so wondered if it's possible to get Volume to work with ALSA.

Any ideas?
